Mike’s Bone Lick BBQ Night @ P’Cheen
Well, I know it’s not a BBQ joint, but you folks need to know about our most recent Q experience. On Highland Ave in the Old Fourth Ward lies P’Cheen, a very hip restaurant that I have heard good things about.
I recently read that Monday night is BBQ night, so I rallied the troops on a rainy evening and we did what we do best. The BBQ menu is pretty extensive and they offer an array of BBQ sauces that represent your major players in the world of BBQ like Kansas City, Vinegar based etc. I had the smoked chicken and sausage plate with cheese grits and collard greens, but not before we devoured a plate of pulled pork nachos that rocked! I am not usually a nacho guy, but the pork was so smoky and the toppings were generously applied…very good. Others at the table enjoyed some beer cheese soup, and it was not long before the spoons were clanking around for that last bit of goodness. I was a bit shocked when my plate first arrived because the portions at P’Cheen are not huge. One sausage link and a nice piece of chicken was accompanied by two sides in relatively small serving cups. As I dug in though, it all was made clear to me.
The food is incredible and the meats are smoked with love and care. The sausage was some of the best I have had, and the collards were perfectly kicked up so that I did not add a thing. I think two links of sausage might be in order though, since they are not huge…I’m just sayin’. The cheese grits melt in your mouth, and I was very happy that I was not painfully full after I cleaned my plate. I always eat way too much when I go out, and it is just not healthy to finish all the food on most plates we are presented with. We all had room for desert for once, and I think everyone agreed that the food is top notch. We met Mike LaSage at the bar after our meal and told him that he was about to get good marks from mybbqblog for sure. He is a nice dude and was glad to hear that we enjoyed our Q. So, I give this BBQ experience an A, but it ain’t cheap…sometimes that’s OK though.
