Brett’s BBQ San Diego
I just got back from San Diego where I caught up with some old friends from college and celebrated the Labor Day weekend. What a place it is with the killer weather, beautiful babies, picturesque beaches and wonderful food. On the way to watch Alabama roll over of the Hokies on Saturday night, we stopped by Brett’s BBQ in Encinitas for a pregame meal. My friend and I opted for the sampler plate which feeds two people just right. We had chicken, pulled pork, sliced brisket and baby back ribs along with slaw and baked beans. The chicken was good with a nice medium-spice sauce on it; the ribs were also good and went well with the sweet sauce. The sliced brisket was fork tender and had a nice smoke ring, and the pulled pork was presauced but I truly enjoyed it. The baked beans were in a
thick sauce which I prefer to runny, and the slaw had a mustard base…nothing special but different which is always welcome.
Their table sauce was the thick, sweet kind you find in MS and another welcome change since I just don’t run into it very often. Brett’s has a big patio out back and with the nice west coast breeze and mild temps, it’s a great spot to relax with some Q and a beer. It is also dog friendly like most patios out there which I think is great. Overall, I’ll give Brett’s BBQ a B. The food is solid, but definitely not that higher level like
Moe’s, Home Team and Fox Bros. I know we always go back to these, but they are the bar by which I measure BBQ and that’s just the way it is. Check out Brett’s BBQ and try the sampler for a nice variety of Q
