Sullivan’s Island, SC

After a recent trip to Myrtle Beach, SC for Drive By Truckers at the House of Blues, we decided to detour down to Charleston as the weather took at turn for the worst…thankfully after we played 18 at the Fazio Course at Barefoot.  That’s a really great track by the way for you golfers out there.  Anyway, I called up a friend living in the area, and she hosted us for the evening at her sweet digs on the Isle of Palm.  That evening, we

ventured to Home Team BBQ’s new location on Sullivan’s Island to check out the scene and were blown away with what they have going on.  Middle Street plays host to several bustling bars and restaurants, and Home Team found themselves a sweet spot among the existing establishments.  I really love the layout of the place; as you approach the entrance, you hit the open air patio with plenty of tables plus two bars on either side of the front door connecting outside and inside.  They raise the windows during the day and have several barstools at each bar; at night when the music cranks up, they close ‘em down to keep the noise to a low roar on the patio.  There are plenty of

flat screens on the walls inside as well to keep up with the games of the day.  On this particular evening, there were two bands playing, and the crowd grew as the music picked up.

Having eaten at the original location as well, the new Sullivan’s Island location has it going on with music just about every night and a menu that will satisfy any BBQ lover.  Our waitress was wonderful and besides taking great care of us, she brought out a free plate of Home Team’s smoked wings with a nice dry rub on them.  They have several sauces including a spicy red, mustard based and a tangy white sauce that comes with the wings.  Being from Alabama, I do love a white sauce done right…it’s good and runny!  Home Team specializes in smoked pork, chicken and St. Louis style Ribs while providing delicious soul food sides like mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, collards, grits, slaw, beans and Brunswick Stew.  I also can not say enough about the staff and what a warm welcome we got.  It’s places like this that make going out for BBQ a memorable experience…from the people to the food to the music.

Go hit ‘em up next time you are in Charleston…you’ll be happy you did!

Glad you liked them – they do rock! That was a good pick since there really isn’t any other joints out in those parts – if you come back down again let me know and I’d be happy to recommend some other joints.
