Georgia South Barbecue – Barnesville, GA
I had the distinct privilege of kicking off my personal version of the BBQ tour this past weekend in the picturesque town of Barnesville, GA where I dined at Georgia South BBQ . Upon initial inspection, I was rather impressed by the overall atmosphere and décor. The restaurant was furnished on the inside with picnic tables each with a rack of sauces to choose from. I was a little disappointed by not being able to see where the smoking took place – usually, this adds to the feel as well as the confidence that this is freshly cooked Q.
Lori and I ordered pound of Q, fried okra, Brunswick stew and baked beans. I was definitely disappointed to see that the Q had been generously pre-sauced. This prevented me from getting a good read on the cooking skills involved. I could not tell if the meat was dried out, smoke flavor in the meat, etc. for the meat alone. I find this to be in integral part of judging Q – what does the plain meat taste like. The sauce was a little sweet and too much tomatoy for my liking. With the sauce, the meat seemed very tender and moist – it was shredded well (by hand). The okra was good as were the baked beans, but the stew was just a little off.
I was impressed that my order, at around 5:30PM, took about 10 minutes to prepare. This showed that at a minimum, they didn’t have a bunch of okra pre-cooked or all the sides pre-packaged. As a score for the Q, I’m going to go with a 6. Not a bad place if you are in Barnesville to grab a bit, but don’t go out of your way just to try it out.
