Harold’s Barbecue – Atlanta Georgia – Brad Nevin

Harolds BBQ Atlanta

Last week we made the trek down 85 South to Harold’s, a well-known Atlanta BBQ spot. It’s one of those good old hole in the wall joints with folks sitting at the bar…eating their lunch and watching the crew pull and chop the pork right out in the open. We settled down at a table in the front room and were greeted by a pitcher of sweet tea for ourselves and a plate of chips and cornbread. I don’t know about you, but cornbread is just about my favorite thing in the world…especially split open with a healthy dose of ‘pot liquor’ poured over the top. Today however, the cornbread was bound for my bowl of Brunswick Stew…man it was good. I had the pork plate, chopped, with stew and slaw. The slaw was pretty average and the pork was solid…nothing fancy. Harold’s has a sweet sauce and a spicy sauce, and watch out for the spicy! The menu is basic, and that’s what I like about Harold’s…pork, stew, slaw, fries…the staples. The staff is a nice bunch of older folks, and our experience was pleasant and filling. Harold’s is a great spot for some throwback, reliable BBQ when you feel the need to get back to basics.

harold’s bbq has slipped some in my estimation from FANTASTIC to just above average as the rude staff have finally taken their toll as the quality of bbq fell off a notch not making their attitude worth the pleasure any longer, it’s sad. same may be said of melears, which had at one time been legendary but fell off the map due mostly to indifference.
